Riding to church early Sunday morning with one of my two favorite son-in-laws, we began to discuss the current political environment. As this season of the election cycle rolls around, I wish I lived on a desert island.
Every four years we are inundated with promises that will not be kept, lies that are boldly proclaimed, and relentless assurances that if we don’t act now, all will be lost. “This is the most important election of my lifetime,” rings in my ears since the first one I participated in in the early 1970’s.
While much has been lost from my perspective, and every election is important, and has consequences, the Kingdom of God is still intact, and still my primary focus. What triggered this post was something Jeffrey shared on our drive together.
While remembering the exact words is not an overall strength I possess, the gist of it is that we are fighting the wrong enemy. Our foe is a liar, deceiver, and loves to sow strife, discord, and division. What better way to succeed than to divide and conquer.
Our foe is not those that disagree with us over our choice for a political office. Yes, we may strongly disagree regarding choices made, and policies put forward that most likely won’t be implemented perfectly anyway, but our enemy is not that person.
The Scripture is clear:
Revelation 12:9 – And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.
Ephesians 6:12 – For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 – For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.
1 Peter 5:8 – Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
There are of course more verses, but these are sufficient for the purpose of this post. We have an enemy and that foe is the devil. This enemy is a liar, deceiver, hates us and is actively seeking to devour us. Perhaps those running for office are in his service. Maybe those that you support are not.
Like many other issues in the Church, good people can disagree over them and still be Christians. This must extend to political discussions as well. Our enemy is not those running for office or those that favor a particular candidate. In fact, every one of those verses shared above were written while the writers lived under crazed, demonic inspired if not possessed, despot, rulers. Those writers were not allowed to vote.
Our enemy is clear from Scripture and he is not a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or of any other political party, but he is of the sowing strife, discourse, hatred, division, and destruction party. We are told to be on guard for a reason. We were given armor and weapons to battle this foe, and he is not a running for office this year, for he already is the price of this world:
Ephesians 2:1-2 – And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience…
Please vote. Please share your views and convictions passionately. Please be persuasive in your appeals. But in all of this, please remember who we are really fighting and Whose Kingdom really matters.
