It’s the End of the World – Again… 1

Here are some thoughts on the latest world-ending scare. Having survived all of the previous life-ending events thrust upon us by politics, fear-mongers, and demons, I would strongly suggest we turn our eyes to the Lord, His Word, and do what Jesus clearly demonstrated. Jesus never hid from disease or those plagued by it. He ministered in love to those in need.

In my lifetime I have survived dozens of promises of mass extinction ranging from all of the planets aligning and ripping the earth apart, to returning to an ice age and freezing to death, being burned up due to global warming, meteors/comets striking, AIDS plague, swine, Asian, (fill-in-blank) flu, Y2K, nuclear holocausts, and terminator robots running amok, just to name a few.

If you are worried, here are some words from God Almighty to factor into all the fear being spread:

2 Timothy 1:6-7 – For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Romans 8:15 – For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

Matthew 6:25-34 – Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? …

I always marvel at this verse given the fear of leprosy in Jesus’ day…

Matthew 8:2-3 – And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

I am pretty sure Jesus didn’t even use hand sanitizer before or after touching the dreaded leper. 🙂

While I am not downplaying the current sicknesses (or discouraging hand sanitizer) and the reality that someday even the most outlandish prophet of doom and gloom may be correct, our response still should be in agreement with the above verses.

In addition, we should ultimately be delighted to leave this sin-stained world for our real home with the Lord forever.

2 Corinthians 5:1- 5– For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

Philippians 1:22-24 – If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

We are not to have a spirit of fear or to adopt the viewpoint of the world system around us. We are believers in Jesus Christ and know that God our Father has everything under control. If we live or if we die then we gain. So, rather we live or die we simply cannot lose.

While we are still here in this life then we do what we can to help present the Gospel to others by how we live. Believers must not give in to fear and worry but walk on in faith and trust serving others even in the midst of this current world-ending fear-mongering event.
