I have been somewhat surprised during this political/medical mess involving Covid concerning the level of fear believers seem to be embracing. Though I know we are being saturated with the blasting of it every day from all news outlets and fear certainly seems to be in style right now.
Masks, headlines, billboards, and even the over-the-highway signs all point to certain death if we don’t comply, and all reinforce just how fearful we should be. Covid is going to kill us all!
Well, maybe not. Even the doubtful science of the major outlets seems to state that over 98-99% of the people infected recover. There are multiple studies that show that this virus is similar to a bad flu season. I’m not writing this, however, to argue over whose science we should believe or which doctor’s opinion is correct.
I am writing this to point out that the Scriptures are clear that Christians have nothing to fear from anything, anytime, anywhere. The Church should be unafraid. Jesus rules over death, disease, Covid, war, famine, political parties, governors, George Soros, Bill Gates, and even Fauci.
Christ wins. We win in Christ. We are more than conquerors through and in Him:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35-39)
As I read through Paul’s thoughts, there is nothing outside of God’s love and His control. That would include Covid and politics. Christians should not be afraid. Ever.
Recovering from pneumonia that nearly killed me, it would be easy to slip into fear. But my God is bigger. If I would have died, yes, it would have been sad for those I left behind, but oh what a glorious day for me it would have been! To depart and be with Christ is far better Paul stated, so why would we ever fear death? The painful process perhaps, but the end result is glorious if we really believe what we claim we believe.
Believers seem to be scared of dying from Covid so much that they are danger of throwing out the truth of God’s Word. Death is a defeated foe. Christ overcame and while death is still a real enemy, it is defeated and must submit to Jesus as King of Kings and Lords of Lords. Death cannot steal anyone, for I know Who holds the keys to life and death:
When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. (Revelation 1:17-18)
While the world around us cowers in fear, mostly due to false information and a concerted effort to mislead everyone, believers in the Lord Jesus Christ should not. Ever. No matter where you may fall in your understanding of what is going on politically or medically, fear is not an option. Jesus Christ holds the keys to life and death. He is firmly in control.
So why are believers so fearful about Covid and political plots? Perhaps this verse applies.
…for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (2 Timothy 1:7)
A spirit of fear certainly seems to accurately describe what is going on in the world, and sadly, in many within the Church. We must not give into it. If you already have, then repent. Reread just the few verses I listed. Find hundreds more and dwell on them. We win in Christ even if we die of Covid or rot in jail over resisting the political powers that are corrupt. Fear (other than the fear of the Lord) simply is not the proper option for the Believer in Christ, ever.
Turn off the news, put down the phone or computer websites, and renew you mind and soul in God’s Word. Dwell on the truth and the lies will lose their power.
